Budget essentials checklist

What you really need, what you can borrow or buy secondhand, and where to save.

Budget checklist

A starting point, not a rule. Every family and every child is different. Follow each product's instructions and age limits, and check with your doctor on health questions.

Buy new (safety first)

  • A car seat with known history: avoid used seats if you do not know their full history, and never use one that is expired or has been in a crash
  • A safe sleep surface that meets current Health Canada rules, with a firm mattress and a fitted sheetPopular pick on Amazon.ca: Graco Premium crib & toddler mattress
  • A certified helmet for bikes and scootersPopular pick on Amazon.ca: Kids bike helmet (CPSC)
  • Check recalls on any used product before you use it

Borrow or buy secondhand

  • Clothing in bags of mixed sizes, since babies outgrow items quickly
  • Books, toys and play mats that wipe clean
  • Strollers and carriers in good shape with a working brake and harness
  • Bath tubs, bouncers and play gyms that are clean and complete
  • Swap with friends or local parent groups

Where to save

Skip for now

  • Wipe warmers and other single-use gadgets
  • Many newborn-size outfits
  • Shoes for non-walkers, since soft soles are fine
  • Big toy collections: a few good toys do more
  • A fancy changing table: a safe changing pad on a dresser worksPopular pick on Amazon.ca: Blissful Diary changing pad

Smart habits

  • Make a list before you shop and buy only what is on it
  • Check the current price and availability before buying, since prices change
  • Register for gifts so family and friends cover the bigger items
  • Ask what you can borrow before you buy
